West Virginia University has a lot to offer all students, and on Friday, March 11 the University will highlight the African American student experience with HYPE Day.

The second annual Helping You Pursue Excellence Day will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. at various locations across campus. The student recruiting event is expected to attract around 125 visitors to campus.

“While our African American student population is our largest minority group, finding the resources that prospective African American students may be looking for can still be a challenge,” said Elissa Evans, multicultural recruitment coordinator. “WVU has an abundance of resources on campus for students of color. This is an excellent opportunity to bring the University community together to really highlight what we have to offer.”

The day will begin with an information fair in the Mountainlair ballrooms, where students can meet with representatives and learn more about student organizations, offices on campus and academic departments.

They will then hear from Sydney Morris, a current African American student, as well as Marjorie Fuller, director of the Center for Black Culture and Research and Elizabeth Dooley, associate provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Guests will have the option of choosing from a variety of breakout sessions, including a talk on housing, financial aid, the Parents Club, the Center for Black Culture and Research and student and faculty panels.

Students and guests will eat lunch in a residence hall and hear a presentation from Adriane Williams, assistant professor for Educational Leadership Studies.

The day will conclude with a visit from Provost Michele Wheatly, and campus tours.

In the future, Evans hopes to host additional visitation days like HYPE Day for other under-represented populations.
