Six-time Grammy Award-winning Irish group The Chieftains will perform at the WVU Creative Arts Center on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. Limited tickets remain and are on sale now at the WVU Mountainlair and Creative Arts Center box offices, online at ticketmaster.com, or by phone at 304-293-SHOW or 800-745-3000.

Best known as the band that ushered traditional Irish music into the public eye, The Chieftains have been named Ireland’s Musical Ambassadors, a title that perfectly captures the group’s ability to bring people together. Though the band plays traditional Irish folk, they have collaborated with an extraordinary number of artists, including Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, Ziggy Marley, The Rolling Stones and Madonna. In addition to their six Grammy awards, The Chieftains have also won an Emmy and a Lifetime Achievement award from BBC Radio 2. The group also recorded music for the Oscar-winning film Barry Lyndon and earned a Genie Award (the Canadian equivalent of an Oscar) for their music on The Grey Fox.

In keeping with their cross-cultural tradition, the band has performed for the Pope and on top of the Great Wall of China, as well as being the first to perform in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Their newest album San Patricio, a collaboration with blues/Tex-Mex rocker Ry Cooder, has continued to expand The Chieftains’ tradition of cultural outreach, coming together for a commanding, proud sound. The New York Times describes the new musical partnership as “thoroughly Mexican yet utterly Irish, carried aloft by tin whistles, skin drums, pipes, harps, guitars and stomping feet.”

Tickets are on sale now at the WVU Mountainlair and Creative Arts Center box offices. Ticket prices range from $37 to $42, depending on seat location. WVU Students can purchase tickets for $27 with a valid WVU Student I.D. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 304-293-SHOW and 800-745-3000.
