Join West Virginia University’s major music ensembles as they perform a Gala Scholarship Fundraiser at the Creative Arts Center on Thursday (Nov. 4).

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and will feature some of the finest student ensembles at WVU.

The program will include the WVU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mitchell Arnold, performing the Overture to “Die Meistersinger von N�rnberg” by Richard Wagner; the Combined University Women’s Choirs, conducted by Kathleen Shannon, performing “All I Was Doing Was Breathing” by David L. Brunner, a new piece based on the poetry of the Indian mystic, Mirabai, and “Joshua” by Paul Caldwell & Sean Ivory; the WVU Wind Symphony, conducted by John Hendricks, III, performing Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations,” arranged by Earl Slocum; the WVU Percussion Ensemble, performing “Fugata,” composed the famed Argentinian composer of Tango, Astor Piazzolla.

In addition, the CMQ Jazz Ensemble, from the WVU Jazz Area, directed by Paul Scea, will perform selections from the compositions of Duke Ellington; and the WVU African Drum and Dance Ensemble, directed by Michael Vercelli, will present “Fume-Fume,” a social dance from Ghana. The vocal jazz group “Same Difference,” directed by Kathleen Shannon, will perform “Bailando” by Greg Jasperse, and there will also be a performance by the WVU Marching Band, the “Pride of West Virginia.”

The proceeds from the Gala Fundraiser concert will be used to support music scholarships at WVU.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for WVU faculty/staff and senior citizens, and $5 for all students and for members of groups of 10 or more.
