Omar Wazir, of Charleston, and Tracy Speilman, of Beckley, have been announced as West Virginia University’s 2010 Homecoming king and queen.

Wazir and Speilman were crowned during halftime of the WVU-Syracuse football game on Saturday (Oct. 23) at Milan Puskar Stadium.

Wazir, a senior biology and history major, is director of health and wellness for the Student Government Association and is a Gold and Blue Ambassador.

He regularly volunteers at Ruby Memorial Hospital, and has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Wazir has also been recognized as a Mr. Mountaineer finalist.

He is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Alpha Epsilon Delta honorary.

He was sponsored by Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Badshah and Karen Wazir.

Speilman, a senior nursing major, is a governor on WVU’s Student Government Association Board of Governors and was recently nominated as social chair of the College Republicans.

She is a member of Alpha Phi sorority, where she currently serves as director of member development.

During her free time, Speilman volunteers with the Amazon Water Walk, United Methodist Temple, Scott’s Run Settlement House, Head Start and cooks meals at the Rosenbaum Family and Bartlett houses.

She is sponsored by Alpha Phi, and is the daughter of Burge and Cynthia Speilman.

Other king candidates were: Kevin Beck, Fairport, N.Y.; Kyle Golombos, Hillsborough, N.J.; Zachary Liberto, Wexford, Pa.; and Taylor Richmond, Beckley.

Other queen candidates were: Meghan Flinn, Oakland, Md.; Melissa “Mel” Moraes, South Park, Pa.; Rachel Viglianco, St. Albans; and Dana Zelder, Pittsburgh, Pa.

WVU alumni and former University president and first lady David and Susan Hardesty were also recognized for their service to WVU. The WVU Alumni Association honored them as Outstanding Alumni during halftime. More on their service can be found at http://go.wvu.edu/blmXUB .

Also during Homecoming weekend, former Mountaineer quarterback and College Hall of Famer Major Harris led the annual Homecoming parade on Friday (Oct. 22) down High Street. Harris was the first quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards and pass for 5,000 yards during his three-year Mountaineer career. He was honored during halftime.
