It is Homecoming Week at West Virginia University, and fraternities and sororities across campus are coming together in the spirit of competition and community outreach.

Homecoming Week is a great way to get excited about being a Mountaineer,” said Ashley Staggers, program advisor for WVU fraternities and sororities. “At WVU these Homecoming events have been a tradition on campus for decades, and it is great way for alumni to connect with the chapters and undergraduates.”

Homecoming events for the week include: a banner competition, Greeks volunteering with WVU’s Condom Caravan and a food drive to benefit the student food bank The Rack.

Other events include:

• Greek Games, Tuesday (Oct. 19), 4:30-5:30 p.m., Mountainlair Plaza
• American Red Cross Blood Drive, Wednesday (Oct. 20), 1-7 p.m., Wesley Gymnasium at the United Wesley Church on the corner of North High and Willey streets
• T-shirt sale to benefit WVU’s holiday toy drive (SHOP/ Toy Mountain), Wednesday (Oct. 20), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mountainlair; t-shirts will cost between $1.50 and $10.
• Airbands, Thursday (Oct. 21), 4-6 p.m., Mountainlair Plaza
• Homecoming Parade and float contest, Friday (Oct. 22), 6:30 p.m., downtown Morgantown

The fraternities and sororities will also make monetary donations, in addition to the t-shirt sale, to benefit the SHOP program.

Throughout the week, each fraternity and sorority will receive points based on their participation in the events. At the end of the week, the fraternity and sorority with the most points gets a trophy.

Last year during Homecoming, WVU fraternities and sororities collected more than 4,000 canned food items and donated $5,545 to the United Way. This year, Staggers said, they hope to contribute even more.

Anyone interested in donating to The Rack can place their donations in the boxes in the Student Organizations Services wing of the Mountainlair.
