Five-time Grammy Award winner and esteemed country star Mary Chapin Carpenter will bring a soulful performance to the WVU Creative Arts Center on Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Mountainlair and Creative Arts Center box offices, online at www.ticketmaster.com, or by calling 304-293-SHOW and 800-745-3000.

When five-time Grammy Award winner Mary Chapin Carpenter comes around, she brings with her a talent that blurs the lines between musical genres. Carpenter’s singing and songwriting abilities catapulted her into the music industry from the day she sang her first song. Her 10 albums are a mellifluous timeline of her development as an artist, starting out as folk, moving into country and eventually intertwining the two with her own alternative touch, as shown in her new album, Age of Miracles.

Carpenter’s first single, “Down at the Twist and Shout,” won her first Grammy, followed by the quadruple-platinum, chart-busting album Come On, Come On, which spent 97 weeks on the Country Top 100 charts. Carpenter has also won multiple Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year Awards, as well as Top Female Artist from the Academy of Country Music. She has “risen through the country ranks without flash or bravado,” (New York Times) and has discovered a penchant for tapping into more philosophical subjects and facing tough issues in her songs. But despite her more intense work on Between Here and Gone and The Calling, Carpenter’s sound is still reminiscent of the playfulness on tracks like “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” a spirited jaunt that received a Grammy Record of the Year nomination. Her powerful sound has won her the revered “Spirit of Americana Free Speech in Music Award,” The Americana Association’s accolade for artists whose work raises awareness and promotes free speech.

Opening for Carpenter will be fellow singer-songwriter Garrison Starr, an edgy young artist and former tour-mate. Starr has played at the Lilith Fair, toured with Melissa Etheridge, Steve Earle and Jay Nash, and has had a plethora of poignant singles featured on popular TV shows such as The Hills and Life Unexpected.
