Maneuvering through the game of life is often a windy road.

But a unique partnership between the Mountaineer Parents Club, WVU Career Services and the WVU Alumni Association is helping students and parents navigate their way to success – during and after college.

“Life 101,” a series of mini educational sessions, will give students tips on various topics, ranging from job hunting, budgeting, and writing a resume, to dressing/dining, life after college and finding the right major. The series is part of the 2010 Fall Family Weekend scheduled for Oct. 1-3.

Andrew Scritchfield, a 1998 graduate of the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism, will be the featured speaker for the breakfast beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 3. Scritchfield, a cameraman for NBC News who has covered President Barack Obama as well as other international stories, will offer his professional and personal insights for students.

In addition to Scritchfield, the event will feature fellow alumni who are returning to campus to share their experiences and tips on taking advantage of opportunities while in college, as well as providing valuable tips on life after college. The event includes a panel of young alumni who will offer advice on how to adapt to your first year out of college, as well as addressing how to achieve success in your professional life.

“We often hear from both parents and students that they want opportunities to get information on the job search, how to dress for an interview, networking and other important issues facing students as they prepare to graduate,” said Sabrina Cave, executive director, Mountaineer Parents Club. “This is a unique opportunity for us to use the tools and resources we have on campus, while engaging our young alumni who can offer guidance and tips for our students. It’s a great way to reach out to students and families.”

The event includes six different seminars, and attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for several sessions. The event is part of the Mountaineer Parents Club’s Fall Family Weekend and will take place on Sunday, Oct. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. The cost is $7 per person and includes breakfast, networking opportunities, and participation in the educational sessions. Students and parents can get more information, including overviews of each session, as well as register online at: http://familyweekend.wvu.edu/events/schedule_for_sunday.
