Pianist Gregory Partain of Transylvania University in Kentucky will present a guest artist recital at the WVU Creative Arts Center, Wednesday, Sept. 15. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performing Hall (200A). The program will include “Sonata in C Major, Op. 53” (Waldstein) by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), “Sonatine” by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) and “Sonata in B minor, Op. 58” by Frederic Chopin (1810-1849).

In his 23 years on the concert stage, Partain has appeared as recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist throughout the United States and has performed in Germany, Poland, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Russia and Greece.

He was the national winner of the KMS Resident Artist Competition in Seattle, and won first prizes in the Memphis Beethoven Piano Sonata Competition and the Kingsville International Piano Competition.

He was also a finalist in the Concert Artists Guild, New York Competition and is a Laureate of the Indianapolis Beethoven Foundation Auditions. As the 2005 Kentucky Music Teachers Association Commissioned Composer, Partain composed a nine-movement concert Requiem for a cappella choir. In 2007, the Kentucky Arts Council awarded him an Al Smith Professional Assistance grant for his collected works.

Partain received his bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at the University of Washington, and master’s and doctoral degrees from The University of Texas at Austin as a Javits Fellowship recipient. He is professor of music and music program director at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., where he holds a Bingham Award for Excellence in Teaching.
