West Virginia University Safety and Health Extension Service is announcing six U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) classes to be held in September in Morgantown and Weston, W.Va.

-On Sept. 14, the OSHA #7410 “Managing Excavation Hazards” class will be held in Morgantown.

In this one-day course, students will learn about the role and responsibility of the employer to assign a competent person to an excavation site and arm that person with the knowledge to perform the work properly. Topics that will be covered include the understanding and application of definitions relating to OSHA’s Excavation Standard (Subpart P), excavation hazards and control measures, and soil analysis.

Seating is limited and preregistration is required. Please preregister by Aug. 31. Tuition is $225 a person.

-On Sept. 15, the #7105 “Excavation and Emergency Planning” class will be offered in Weston. The one-day course focuses on OSHA requirements for emergency action plans and fire protection plans. Preparing for emergencies is a basic principle of workplace safety and health.
Seating is limited and preregistration is required. To preregister, sign up by Sept. 1. Tuition is $225 a person.

-On Sept. 16, the #7115 “Lockout/Tagout” class will be offered in Morgantown.

Students who attend the one-day course will learn about the role and responsibility of the employer to develop and implement an energy control program, or lockout/tagout (LOTO), for the protection of workers while performing, servicing and maintenance activities on machines and equipment along with additional essential information.

Seating is limited and preregistration is required. Please register by Sept. 2. Tuition is $225 a person.

-On Sept. 21-24, the #510 “Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Construction” class will be held in Morgantown.

The four-day course is designed for personnel in the private sector and covers OSHA policies, procedures, and standards, as well as construction safety and health principles. Topics that the course will provide training on include scope and application of the OSHA construction standards with a special emphasis placed on the areas which are most hazardous.

Seating is limited and preregistration is required. Please register by Sept. 7. The cost is $750 a person.

-On Sept. 21, the #7300 “Permit-Required Confined Spaces” will be held in Morgantown.

This one-day course will discuss the requirements of OSHA’s permit-required confined space standard, 29 CFR 1910.146. It is designed for small employers or designated representative (line supervisor or manager) with the responsibility to develop a permit space program.

Seating is limited and preregistration is required. Please register by Sept. 7. Tuition is $225 a person.

– On Sept. 29, the #7205 “Health Hazard Awareness” class will be held in Morgantown.

This course provides an introduction to common health hazards that are encountered in the workplace. These health hazards will include exposure to chemicals, asbestos, silica and lead. The course will feature the following topics: identification of hazard, sources of exposure, health hazard information, evaluation of exposure, and engineering and work practice controls.

Seating is limited and preregistration is required. Please register by Sept. 15. Tuition is $225 a person.

Customized group training sessions are also available on a contractual basis for employers wishing to train their workforce.
