John Landis knows how to juggle. The WVU senior works part-time at his internship at the Department of Energy and keeps up with his studies in petroleum and natural gas engineering while helping his wife, Megan, raise their 9-month-old son. The dedicated student and father is just one of the more than 440 deserving West Virginia students who will be receiving nearly $500,000 in scholarships from the WVU Alumni Association Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund (LPEF).

“My family and I are so grateful to have the support of the Alumni Association’s Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund,” Landis says. “This financial assistance will help me remain focused on my education and my family, while relieving some of the financial burden.”

As one of the oldest scholarship programs on campus, the fund has provided scholarships to more than 4,000 students during its nearly 75-year history.

“We are thrilled to recognize the hard work and dedication of outstanding students like John Landis,” said Stephen L. Douglas, president & CEO, WVU Alumni Association. “This year’s distribution of nearly $500,000 in scholarships is the second largest distribution in the history of the LPEF. We appreciate the generous contributions of alumni and friends who have enabled us to continue our long-standing tradition of providing much needed financial support to the next generation of Mountaineers.”

An open house for students and parents will be held on Sunday (Aug. 22) from 3-5 p.m. in the Ruby Grand Hall of The Erickson Alumni Center where they will be able to pick up their scholarship checks. Members of the LPEF Trust Committee will also be on hand to greet students and their families.

Scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year are presented to high school valedictorians, student body presidents and other deserving students from West Virginia. To qualify, recipients must be a resident of West Virginia; demonstrate a financial need; hold a minimum grade point average of 2.75; and demonstrate good citizenship as outlined in his or her extracurricular activities.
