West Virginia University President James P. Clements will present a State of the University address on Wednesday, June 23, at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

The noon address will recap a year of collective successes, and focus on ways WVU is meeting the needs of a 21st century world while helping blaze a new path toward the American dream.

For more than 30 years, the National Capital Area Chapter of the WVU Alumni Association has sponsored the event honoring West Virginia’s congressional delegation – Sen. Robert C. Byrd, Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV, Rep. Nick Joe Rahall, Rep. Alan Mollohan and Rep. Shelley Moore Capito – as well as alumni and friends of WVU. The State of the University Address has been a signature event for alumni friends in the Washington, D.C., metro area and is one of the longest running advocacy programs for WVU alumni.

“The reach of West Virginia University is global, and the State of the University Address is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our University, its alumni, students, faculty and programs,” said Stephen L. Douglas, president & CEO, WVU Alumni Association. “We appreciate the support and dedication of National Capital Area Chapter alumni for ensuring that this event is a success.”

This year’s event sponsors include: Alpha Natural Resources, Chesapeake Energy, GolinHarris International, International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers, Patriot Coal, Toyota and The Widmeyer Group. In addition, 15 WVU colleges and units have provided sponsorships.

Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit the John F. Nicholas Jr. National Capital Area Chapter Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to students in the D.C.-Metro area attending WVU, as well as the New Home for Mountaineers Building Fund. To date, more than $100,000 has been raised for scholarships, making it the second largest scholarship fund provided by an alumni chapter.

The State of the University Address will be held at the Newseum, 555 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, D.C. For more information, visit: http://alumni.wvu.edu.
