There’s a different kind of camp fire taking place at West Virginia University Jackson’s Mill this June when teens from across the country gather for the 2010 Junior Fire Fighter Camp.

Junior Fire Fighter Camp is a weeklong camp that provides teens between the ages of 14 and 17 with opportunities to work hands-on with firefighters and other emergency professionals.

The camp begins June 26 and ends July 1.

Topics covered include aircraft rescue firefighting, in which campers assist firefighters in battling a blaze outside of the University’s mobile fire aircraft simulator. This is one of many live-fire training operations that campers participate in during the week.

Other training will take place with fire apparatuses, hose evolutions, team building, personal protective equipment, portable fire extinguishers, ventilation and self-contained breathing apparatuses.

Faculty and staff from WVU’s Fire Service Extension coordinate the camp and assist with training and leadership building.

The cost for the camp is $250, which includes all meals and lodging. Scholarships may be available for those who qualify.

Deadline for registration is June 11.
