Explore, create and enjoy this summer by signing up for a class in art, music, theater or dance!
WVU’s Community Arts Program will be registering students for summer classes at the Creative Arts Center from May 24 through June 18.
The Community Arts Program offers private lessons for children and adults in piano, organ, strings, Suzuki violin, woodwinds, brass, percussion, voice, harp, guitar, jazz singing, jazz piano, jazz improvisation, recording technology and theory and composition.
The summer session is flexible to accommodate various summer schedules. Students may register for any number of lessons throughout the session, depending on teacher availability.
New classes offered this summer, include:
Creative Writing for Kids (ages 10-13) is a fun class where students explore the “big three” (poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction), and talk about where to find inspiration, what different forms writing could take and ways to create a writing community.
So You Want to Write a Memoir: Boot Camp for Future Memoirists (adults) is a workshop where students will learn the basic principles of turning life stories into compelling creative nonfiction, with the idea of creating a project plan for writing a longer memoir. In addition, participants will receive instruction on how to get a manuscript ready for publication.
Fiction Workshop for Adults is a course for students who have a serious investment in their work and are eager to learn and open to receiving constructive feedback. Students will be expected to bring a complete story they have previously written to the first class period.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Children’s Theatre Production (ages 7-15) is similar to the year-long children’s theater class held in the fall and spring semesters, but will be more abbreviated and informal for the summer months. Students will study the enchanting classic Shakespeare piece about magic and fairies, and will present a small performance for family and friends during the last class.
Play Production (high school to adult) is a class that explores ways to produce plays in the classroom, or with a low budget, with special attention given to recycled materials. It covers scenic, costume and sound design, among other areas. Discussion of materials and methods will be combined with hands-on exercises.
Landscape Painting for Adults is designed to introduce students to landscape painting directly from observation. Students will work with oil paint, exploring various styles and techniques right in the field. Focus will be on gaining basic understanding of the history of landscape painting, while working on specific methods.
Intro to Clothes Design for Teens: Re-use and Recycle (ages 13-17) will teach students how to re-use old, out-of-style or ill-fitting clothes and turn them into stylish, one-of-a-kind fashions. The workshop will teach beginner clothes assembly, using only hand-sewing techniques to create original clothing. What a unique way to enhance your wardrobe!
Cartoons, Zines and Comic Books (ages 12-15) will introduce students to cartoon drawing techniques and get them started in the creation of their own original comic book. Participants will study various forms of self-published literature and artist books through history for inspiration.
Create Your Own Monster (ages 6-10) is a workshop where children will design and create stuffed creatures, monsters and puppets, using basic hand-sewing techniques. Students will not work from pre-arranged templates, but will design monsters from their own imagination and learn skills to bring them to life.
Flutopia: Adult Flute Choir is open to any amateur or professional adult flutist with at least four years of playing experience. Flutopia will meet eight times throughout June and July for 90-minute rehearsals, with times to be determined. Large ensemble repertoire will include a variety of styles and time periods. Several performances will be scheduled throughout the Morgantown area.

Office hours in Room 401A of the Creative Arts Center are Monday-Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will be closed Monday, May 31, for Memorial Day.
