Media Advisory: WVU ROTC students to be commissioned into Army

WHAT: Thirteen West Virginia University Army ROTC cadets will be commissioned as second lieutenants into the Army and enter into the active component or the reserve component (which includes the U.S. Army Reserves and the Army National Guard.)

WHEN: Friday, May 14 at 10 a.m.

WHERE: WVU Mountainlair ballroom

WHO: WVU alumnus Brig. Gen. Dr. Richard W. Thomas will give the commissioning address. Thomas is an Army physician and serves as the U.S. Army assistant surgeon general in Washington, D.C. Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree from WVU and graduated from both WVU’s School of Dentistry and WVU’s School of Medicine.

Those being commissioned in May include:

• Jacob Bostic, criminology and investigative sciences, Army Reserves
• Stephen Bruner, political science, Active Duty
• Joshua Gotay, political science, Active Duty
• Gregory Gutta, public administration, Army National Guard
• John Hickman, political science, Army National Guard
• Warren Hitchcock, sociology and anthropology, Army National Guard
• Andrew Lang, criminology and investigative science, Active Duty
• Ian Lanigan, criminology and investigative science, Active Duty
• Kyle Lewis, history, Army Reserves
• Andrew McDaniel, criminology and investigative science, Active Duty
• Benjamin Rucker, business administration, Active Duty
• Robert Skiba, business and economics, Active Duty
• Chris Wright, multidisciplinary studies, Active Duty

BACKGROUND: Army ROTC is a four-year program. All students who are commissioned through their participation in ROTC undergo a variety of training, during which they are evaluated on their leadership, academic and physical skills.

WVU’s Army ROTC program was recognized in 2007-08 as the best program in the Eastern Region of the United States and was awarded the General Douglas MacArthur Award.
