West Virginia University is committed to honoring those among its faculty that set an example of public service.

The Eberly College has announced that this year’s recipients of the Outstanding Public Service Awards are Claire St. Peter Pipkin, assistant professor of psychology, and Michael Mays, professor of mathematics.

St. Peter Pipkin’s volunteer activities are concentrated in the public school system in Morgantown. She instituted a program to aid teachers in dealing with student behavior problems. WVU students are able to intern with Monongalia County by providing counseling. If a K-12 student is determined to have extreme behavior issues, St. Peter Pipkin handles the counseling herself.

For his part, Mays has taken steps to increase the mathematics skills of students in West Virginia. He serves as director of the Institute for Math Learning, which provides math education services to approximately 1,500 high school students in West Virginia. Additionally, Mays works closely with the West Virginia Department of Education to develop math education plans.

“These two professors exemplify the diversity of faculty efforts to be in service to the citizens of West Virginia,” said Interim Dean Rudolph P. Almasy. “I salute them for their commitment to helping make positive change in our communities.”

As recipients of this award, St. Peter Pipkin and Mays are eligible to serve as faculty marshals for the spring commencement ceremony, their names will be listed on a plaque in Woodburn Hall and they will be awarded $1,000 to pursue professional development opportunities. Both faculty were publically recognized at the annual Eberly College Awards Ceremony on April 10.
