Community service, late-night brainstorming sessions and creative thinking have paid off for members of two WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism student organizations.
Last month, the WVU Ad Club took second place at the American Advertising Federation’s regional competition. In addition, WVU’s chapter of Ed on Campus, a group that focuses on magazine writing, was recently named Best Established Chapter by its parent organization, Ed2010.
“We’re very proud of our student organizations for their efforts in professional development and community service,” said Maryanne Reed, Dean of the School of Journalism. “These awards are a testament to their hard work, dedication and commitment to furthering the profession.”
Members of the Ad Club traveled to Cleveland on April 23 for the AAF District Five Regional Student Advertising Competition. The team, led by senior president Delia Pavlichko of Andover, N.J., pitched the idea they developed for this year’s corporate sponsor, State Farm Insurance.
Prior to the competition, students were asked to research State Farm and its competitors, identify potential problem areas and devise an integrated communications campaign targeting 18- to 25-year-olds. WVU competed against 12 colleges and universities to capture the second place title. WVU School of Journalism professors Dr. Kelley Crowley and Dana Coester are co-advisors for the group.
Just three years after starting a chapter at WVU, Ed on Campus has positioned itself as the Best Established Chapter in Ed2010’s The Best of Ed on Campus Awards. Ed2010 is a national organization that coordinates with aspiring magazine editors and writers at colleges across the country to provide practical advice for finding jobs and succeeding in the magazine industry.
Each year, the organization rewards chapters whose outstanding panels, resume critiques, office tours, and other magazine-related events have made a significant impact on their schools.
Club president Paige Lavender of Charleston says the incorporation of community service into the group’s activities is what impressed judges the most. Members recently participated in Relay for Life, a volunteer-driven cancer fundraising event of the American Cancer Society.
WVU School of Journalism Associate Dean and Associate Professor John Temple serves as the faculty advisor to Ed on Campus. Members will receive a plaque and a feature on Ed2010.com.
