From avid to budding gardeners, there is a class for each skill level at the 2010 West Virginia University Extension Service and Monongalia County Master Gardener Spring Tonic Symposium.

The one-day symposium is Saturday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on WVU’s Evansdale Campus in the NRCCE building.

Practical home gardening advice will be offered in each of the 12 available workshops. Participants can choose from the following categories.

• Native Landscaping
• Growing a Garden Poem
• Top 10 Most Beneficial and Most Harmful Insects
• Backyard Browsing – Edible Medicinal Plants
• From Vine to Wine – Growing Grapes in West Virginia
• Landscaping for year-round Color
• Shitake Cultivation in Oak Logs
• Power Equipment: the 10 Fingers of Safety
• Contain Yourself – Growing Herbs in Containers
• The Real “Dirt” on Soil
• Succulent Wreaths
• Building a Rain Barrel

The cost is $40 per person, and participants can register by calling 304-291-7201 or e-mailing Sheryl Bergen Jarvis at SBJarvis@mail.wvu.edu. Registration forms are also available at www.monongalia.ext.wvu.edu.

Seating is limited, so participants are encouraged to register soon. The early registration deadline is May 14.

Lunch is not provided or included in the registration fee. Participants will have the opportunity to purchase plants from the various vendors set-up during the two-hour lunch break.
The Master Gardener program, sponsored by WVU Extension Service, aims to increase knowledge and understanding of horticultural topics. Topics include flower, vegetable and fruit production, lawn care, house plant care, plant disease, insect pest control and more.
