West Virginia University’s Student Government Association will hold a vigil on Tuesday, April 20 for the 29 coal miners who lost their lives in Montcoal.

The miners were killed after an explosion at Upper Big Branch mine on April 5. The vigil will be held at 8:30 p.m. on the steps in front of the University’s Mountainlair.

“West Virginians all over the state have been affected by this terrible tragedy. We, the students, want to show that those miners and their families have our thoughts and prayers,” said Chris Lewallen, student body president.

During the ceremony, baskets will be passed around collecting donations for the Upper Big Branch Family Fund.

The fund, co-chaired by men’s basketball Coach Bob Huggins, will go to the families impacted by the disaster.
