A dedicated member of the West Virginia University faculty and his wife are funding a scholarship for students in the Division of Social Work.
Barry Locke, associate professor of social work, will retire at the end of the semester, but he and his wife will continue supporting the Division by funding one scholarship for a native of West Virginia. As the fund grows, the number of scholarships will increase.
” Dr. Locke is recognized as a leader in rural social work throughout the nation,” says Karen Harper-Dorton, chair of the Division of Social Work. “His teaching, presentations and publications have inspired students and colleagues as they continue their work in rural community development and leadership in various state and non-profit organizations. This gift is a continuation of the very good and important work he does.”
The Barry and Barbara Locke Social Work Scholarship will be available to students from the state who are interested in rural social work practice or working with the elderly; two areas of study in which the Division excels.
According to Locke, the social work program is favored by first generation college students who want to help other people, a description that fits both him and his wife.
“We value what well educated social workers contribute to our society,” remarked Locke. “Further, we know the challenges and limited recognition that often comes with this career and respect the sacrifices our students often make. We hope to add just a little bit of financial support for at least one of them.”
The Lockes were motivated to create this scholarship, because many West Virginians still do not have the resources to pursue a college degree. They hope that this scholarship will create awareness of the service WVU provides to the state by educating first-rate social workers.
