The West Virginia University student union – the Mountainlair – has finally been brought into the new millennium with a more modern and updated look.

A new tile floor, an innovative drop ceiling, a redesigned information desk and the creation of two new offices have been added to the Mountainlair’s entryway.

The renovations finished on schedule and within the budget of $250,000. Demolition began Dec. 1, 2009 and staff members moved back into the space on
March 1.

“The information area is a welcoming platform for current and future students. The new and improved welcome center features state-of-the-art technology and better personalized service,” said Sonja Wilson, senior program administrator for the Mountainlair.

Additions to the welcome center include two full access computers so that attendants are able to access information for students. In addition, a big screen television was mounted above the desk that constantly runs with updated events, news and information for students.

The main lobby of the Mountainlair has not undergone any major renovations since its original creation in 1968.

Plans are currently under way to continue replacing the tile floor towards the food court.

“We are pleased with the way the project turned out,” said Jeff Dunbar, assistant director of the Mountainlair. “The students appear to be happy with the final product and we’re excited to be working on plans for the floor.”
