The West Virginia University Chamber Winds will present a concert at the Gladys G. Davis Theatre inside the Creative Arts Center on Monday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Conducted by John Weigand, the performance is free and the public is cordially invited to attend an evening of classical and contemporary wind music from members of the ensemble and a string quintet of WVU students.

The program includes “Octet for Winds” by Franz Krommer and “Siegfried Idyll” by Richard Wagner.

“Wagner wrote ‘Siegfried Idyll’ for his wife on the occasion of their anniversary, and had musicians play the piece on the stairwell of their home to awaken her,” Weigand said.

Also on tap is “Little Threepenny Music,” a suite from the “Threepenny Opera,” by Kurt Weill.

“German composer Kurt Weill wrote the ‘Threepenny Opera’ in 1929 as a farce on the typical musical with a happy ending,” Weigand said.

“There are strong early jazz influences in this work, and included in the suite is the most famous tune, ‘Mack the Knife,’” he added.
