Three outstanding guest conductors will bring their talents to Morgantown as part of the 2010 WVU Invitational Honor Bands event Feb 11-13.

Robert W. Smith, renowned composer and professor of music at Troy University; Brad Townsend, director of athletic bands at Oregon State University; and Keith Reed, director of bands at Morgantown High School, will serve as the 2010 guest conductors.

The three will also perform with the WVU Wind Symphony on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre at the CAC.

This Wind Symphony winter concert will be under the direction of conductor John Hendricks, III, and assistant conductor Dearl J. Drury.

George Willis, head of the WVU percussion program, will appear as a guest artist on the timpani.

The evening’s highlights include “Huldigungsmarsch,” by Richard Wagner; “Spoon River,” by Percy Grainger; “Americans We,” by Henry Fillmore; “Monument,” by Robert W. Smith; “Resonances I,” by Ron Nelson; “The Monkey King,” by Gregory Youtz; and “Raise the Roof,” by Michael Daugherty.

Approximately 350 student musicians, representing more than 100 high schools in West Virginia and several surrounding states, will participate in the 2010 Honor Bands event with auditions, rehearsals and concerts planned over several days.

Student musicians are recommended to the program by their high school band directors and then selected to participate on the basis of their musical ability and accomplishments.

They will present the annual Honor Bands concert at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre at the CAC.

This concert is free and open to the public.
