Jason Brown will present “The Mathematics Behind the Music” today (Feb. 9), at 5:30 p.m. in 252 Hodges Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.

“We are pleased that we could reschedule this exciting event, and hope that audiences will come out to see this innovative presentation,” said Eddie Fuller, chair of the Department of Mathematics.

Brown is famous for cracking the opening cord of the Beatle’s “A Hard Day’s Night” using the mathematical formula Fourier transform.

His work on over 60 research articles and his book, “Our Days Are Numbered,” has garnered media attention on an international stage in such well-known media outlets as CBC, BBC, Guitar Player Magazine, NPR radio and the websites of Wired and the Wall Street Journal.

Brown will be discussing different types of mathematical techniques that are relevant to musicians, including derivation of the blues and graph colorings, the musical art of being ambiguous (or not), and musical and mathematical transformations.
