Undergraduates looking for something to do this summer now have an opportunity to participate in a range of research programs through WVNano.
The programs take place in the U.S. and abroad and allow students to work in nanoscale science.
The first, the WVNano Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Program, is open to rising sophomores in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) majors. The program runs from June 1- July 30. Selected students will work in a WVNano research lab for eight weeks during the summer under a WVNano professor and a graduate or postdoctoral mentor.
The stipend is $3,600 for the eight weeks of works. Students will work 40 hours a week and must attend a one-credit research class (paid for by WVNano). The students are not allowed to have another job or take summer classes and will present their work at the Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium on Thursday, July 29.
Applications are available at wvnano.wvu.edu/SURE. The review process begins on February 26. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all 20 available positions are filled.
Students interested in conducting summer research abroad may apply for the WVNano International Research Experience for Students program. WVNano IRES will be choosing five students to conduct research in China May 15- July 15.
Applications are available on the WVNano website at wvnano.wvu.edu/SURE. Students should fill out the SURE application and check the area for IRES.
Applications are also available for the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation/WVNano Summer Launch Program. This program, which runs from July 12 – July 30, is for rising freshman interested in STEM disciplines.
First, there is a pre-Freshman summer bridge program for students who will matriculate at WVU in the fall semester of 2010. This component is a three-week residential session with coursework in precalculus mathematics or chemistry fundamentals, along with enrollment in an academic orientation program focusing on study skills, time management and STEM career preparation. Cost for tuition, room, board, books and enhancement experiences are provided for WVNano/LSAMP Scholars.
The WVNano/LSAMP Summer Launch program is offered in conjunction with the WVU Seamless Transition Program.
Applications can be downloaded from the WVNano website at wvnano.wvu.edu/lsamp. Application review will begin on April 15, however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.
WVNano Research Experience for Undergraduates applications are also available on the WVNano website at wvnano.wvu.edu/reu. This summer experience is a unique combination of multidisciplinary programs and team-building research programs in the field of nanotechnology, with applications in environmental monitoring, early disease detection, proteomic/genomic identification and energy efficiency. The stipend is $5,000 plus room and board and the programs runs from May 25 – July 30.
Review of completed applications will begin on March 12. Applicants will be admitted on a rolling basis until all spots are filled. Applicants should be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in science, engineering, or math.
Underrepresented minorities and women from primarily undergraduate institutions in West Virginia and the Appalachian region are especially encouraged to apply.
WVNano Initiative is WVU’s focal point for discovery and innovation in nanoscale science, engineering and education (NSEE).
