In conjunction with West Virginia University’s David C. Hardesty Jr. Festival of Ideas lecture series, WVU will be showing some thought provoking films.
All films will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Mountainlair’s Gluck Theatre.
“Food, Inc.” – Monday, March 1:
“Food, Inc.” is a film that takes an in-depth look at the nation’s food industry. The film exposes the corporations that control the nation’s food supply and, as the filmmaker points out, tend to put profit ahead of consumer health.
The film was produced by Robert Kenner.
“Food, Inc.” is being shown prior to Gary Nabhan’s presentation on “Renewing America’s Food Traditions” on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair ballrooms.
“An Inconvenient Truth” – Tuesday, March 23:
With the impending climate crisis a major topic of concern, “An Inconvenient Truth” looks at former Vice President Al Gore’s crusade to halt global warming. The film exposes the myths and misconceptions that surround the issue.
The film, directed by Davis Guggenheim, won an Academy Award for the Best Documentary Feature and Best Song. It has been one of the highest grossing documentaries with a worldwide audience of an estimated five million people.
“An Inconvenient Truth” is being shown prior to Alan Weisman’s presentation on “The World Without Us” on Wednesday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair ballrooms.
“Precious” – Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13:
Based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire, “Precious” is about an obese, illiterate, black 16-year-old girl. Claireece “Precious” Jones lives with her dysfunctional mother in New York City. She has been raped and impregnated twice by her father, and suffers physical, mental and sexual abuse from her mother.
Inspired by several people in her life, the film is about Precious’ fight and her will to improve her life for the better.
The film, directed by Lee Daniels, won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
“Precious” is being show prior to the WVU Debate Team’s presentation about “The Question: Does Race Matter?” on Wednesday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair ballrooms.
