West Virginia University Hospitals’ Sleep Evaluation Center has been fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

AASM accreditation is the gold standard by which the medical community and the public can evaluate the services provided by a sleep center or laboratory. The accreditation is valid for five years.

To be accredited by the AASM, a sleep center or lab must display and maintain proficiency in testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and physician and staff training.

“We knew that we had a first-rate sleep disorders program and the accreditation confirms that,” said Martha DiGiovine, program manager. “We have a great staff – from our multidisciplinary board-certified physicians to our professional sleep technicians to our support staff. Together, we ensure the highest quality of medical care for people with sleep-related problems.”

The Sleep Evaluation Center, the largest in the area, is among 14 accredited centers in the state, providing services that identify and treat sleep-related disorders. The state-of-the-art facility is located at Ridgeview Business Park in Morgantown. It opened in August 2008.

The six-bed center treats about 1,200 adult and pediatric patients a year.

“We do more than just diagnose sleep disorders and read sleep studies,” said John Young, M.D., WVU neuropsychiatrist and medical director of the center. “We follow patients and offer ongoing treatment.”

“We offer testing and treatment for all types of sleep disorders,” added DiGiovine. “Some common disorders include snoring, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and excessive daytime sleepiness.”

Individuals experiencing sleep disorders need a referral from their physician to be seen at the Sleep Evaluation Center.
