WELL WVU is currently focusing on expanding alcohol education outreach at West Virginia University.

According to the American College Health Association’s Spring 2008 National College Health Assessment, 35.4 percent of college students who drink alcohol reported doing something they regretted while under the influence within the past school year.

On Oct. 29, WELL WVU will hold two events on alcohol safety. An Alcohol Safety Fair will be held in the Mountainlair from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and at 2:30 p.m., an Inmate Presentation will be held in the Gluck Theatre.

At a meeting on Nov. 8, all University wellness coordinators will be educated on the prevalence and treatment of alcohol abuse in the student population. They will also be reminded of campus resources that students can access.

Wellness coordinators are students employed by residential education, working in collaboration with WELL WVU to promote awareness of health activities and services on campus.

Student groups, including fraternities, sororities, student organizations and classes can request wellness programs on alcohol education be presented. Programs can be targeted to specific audiences.

The WELL WVU Web site provides resources on alcohol education, including a virtual blood alcohol calculator and a screening for signs of alcohol abuse. Students are encouraged to visit a licensed healthcare provider for an official diagnosis.

The Web site also contains several articles with tips on staying safe while drinking.

Students can also ask University Health Education Specialist Missy Pforr anonymous online questions about alcohol abuse and safety.

The WELL WVU Student Assistance Program, located at 87 Boreman North, also provides help for students with alcohol problems.
