West Virginia University’s Homecoming Week is not just about kings and queens it is also about connecting with the community.

For the 2009 Homecoming Week, the WVU Greek community has paired with the Boys and Girls Club of Morgantown.

The Homecoming theme this year is “Our Dreams Came True through WVU.” The fraternities and sororities have been split into teams and were assigned a different college or school from around the University.

This year the Greek community will be helping the Boys and Girls Club with their annual event “Knock for the Needy” – where adults and kids trick-or-treat throughout the South Park neighborhood gathering non-perishable food items for local food pantries. The Greek community will be helping the Boys and Girls club reach their goal by hosting a canned food drive. Members of WVU’s fraternities and sororities can bring canned foods to the Student Organizations office in the Mountainlair during Homecoming Week

Additionally members of Greek organizations have been asked to participate in the annual Red Cross blood drive. Students, however, are not just giving blood, they are also volunteering there time to help out at the event. The blood drive is Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 1-7 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church.

Each team was also assigned a WVU student who is currently serving in the armed forces abroad to send a care package to.

Other Homecoming activities include:

• Banners designed by each team displaying their school/college will be displayed on the sorority houses throughout the week.

• Greek games on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m., on the Mountainlair green; participants compete in five different activities including a relay race and hula hoop contest.

• Airbands competition on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 5p.m., on the Mountainlair green; students will participate dance/cheerleading competition with a costume contest at intermission.

• Homecoming parade Friday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. on High Street; each team will design a float that corresponds to their theme. More information about the Homecoming parade is available here: http://wvutoday.wvu.edu/n/2009/10/15/rifle-coach-to-lead-wvu-homecoming-parade.
