West Virginia University’s annual beard-growing competition kicks off with a shave at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Mountainlair commons area.

Organizers are hoping a record number of men come out for the event, a prelude to Mountaineer Week activities that take place Nov. 7-15.

Judging will take place at noon Wednesday, Nov. 12, on the Mountainlair grand staircase. Five faculty members will decide which participant has grown the best beard. Cash prizes of $100 will be awarded for first, $75 for second and $50 for third place.

Mountaineer Mascot Rebecca Durst will emcee the event.

The three-week contest, open to WVU students and sponsored by The Ridge, has been one of the most popular Mountaineer Week events since its start in 1949.

“The beard-growing competition is one of the most popular Mountaineer Week events. It’s a great opportunity for students to show their school spirit and an easy way to earn some extra money,” said Brock Burwell, student chairperson for the beard-growing committee.

WVU students can sign up at the Mountainlair information desk anytime prior to the beginning of the contest. The WVU Bookstore is providing complimentary shaving cream and razors for contestants.
