West Virginia University Urgent Care celebrated its second anniversary in a big way. Shortly after marking two full years of treating patients in the Morgantown area, the facility saw its 35,000th patient.

On the day it opened, Sept. 4, 2007, Urgent Care medical professionals saw 48 patients. Exceeding expectations, the Urgent Care staff was averaging 40 to 50 patients per day with as many as 80-plus during flu season in its first year. By spring 2008, a total of 10,000 patients had been treated.

“WVU Urgent Care has developed a reputation for providing excellent care in a fast and friendly manner. Each year, increasing numbers of patients select us,” Todd Crocco, M.D., chair of the WVU Department of Emergency Medicine, said. “We are committed to continuing our track record as we approach flu season.”

WVU Urgent Care is a walk-in clinic that provides a complete range of medical treatments for minor illness and injury. Healthcare providers see cases that need immediate attention but aren’t life-threatening conditions that require an emergency room visit.

Located off Van Voorhis Road behind Applebee’s Restaurant in Suncrest, Urgent Care is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“Urgent Care was designed to meet the needs of our community for high quality, easily accessible care,” Christopher Goode, M.D., interim medical director of Urgent Care, said. “It allows WVU Healthcare patients an opportunity to access care within the system that they trust. It also allows for better communication with their primary care providers and the numerous specialists that exist at WVU Healthcare.”

Urgent Care is equipped with eight exam rooms and two procedure rooms. Digital X-ray and lab services are provided onsite.

Since opening, WVU Urgent Care has adapted to the needs of a growing patient base. In February, Urgent Care began offering for sale 10 commonly prescribed medications instead of giving patients a written prescription.

Looking to the future, plans are in the works to expand hours during flu season to accommodate school and work schedules.
