West Virginia Universitys College of Creative Arts is hosting a concert dedicated to famous flutists Friday (March 14).

Flutist George Pope, of the University of Akron, and pianist Eric Charnofsky, of the Cleveland Institute of Music and Case Western Reserve University, will present a guest artist recital at 5:30 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A) of the Creative Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Pope is a professor of flute at the University of Akron and instructor of flute at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory. He was principal flute of the Akron Symphony from 1978-2002.

Pope has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, Red {an orchestra}, Tulsa Philharmonic, New Mexico Symphony, Canton Symphony, Lyric Opera Cleveland, Toledo Symphony, Monteux Festival Orchestra, Brevard Music Center Orchestra and at the Spoleto Festival.

A founding member of the Solaris Wind Quintet, he has also appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Ohio, Coryton Trio and Garth Newel Chamber Players and will join the Swannanoa Chamber Players in Asheville, N.C., this summer. A graduate of the University of Tulsa and Northwestern University, he has recorded for Opus One Records and Capstone Records, as well as with the Blossom Festival Band and Akron Symphony on Telarc International.

Charnofsky, a native of Southern California, received his Master of Music degree in collaborative piano from The Juilliard School and also holds degrees in solo piano and composition.

He is currently director of music at Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church in Clevelands University Circle, an instructor of symphonic literature at The Cleveland Institute of Music and instructor of 20th century music history at Case Western Reserve University. Charnofsky worked at the Music Academy of the West as an associate faculty member for eight summers and has recorded a CD with trombonist JoDee Davis on the Albany label.
