Amateur jugglers have the chance to toss their hats (or other props of choice) into the ring at the sixth annual West Virginia Juggling Festival June 3-5 at West Virginia Universitys Student Recreation Center.

The high-flying event, hosted by the WVU Juggling Club, will feature lessons on three-ball juggling and other techniques for people of all ages and skill levels.

People of all levels of ability come to the festival, and if you want to learn something, you only have to ask, said Laura Spengler, Juggling Club president. On Saturday, we have workshops where we teach different props and tricks. Then on Sunday we play games. Cool trophies are involved.

A big draw for families, the festival attracted about 100 participants last year.

It is a like a big family reunion because most of the people that come only get to see each other at the festival,Spengler said.It is always a lot of fun.

For a one-time $4 fee, people may use the designated juggling space at the Rec Center all three days. Spectators are also welcome to attend and watch from the observation area at no cost.

A show featuring local jugglers will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 4, in G24 Eiseland Hall. Admission is free.

On Sunday, June 5, jugglers will square off at the Jugglympics, testing their skills in events such as Simon Says, Juggling Limbo, Combat and Diabolo Speed Pass. Teams will vie for trophies with the competition getting under way at noon at the Student Rec Center.

Formed in 1998, the WVU Juggling Club is a mix of WVU students and community members ranging in age from 11 to 73.

Juggling is a great way to meet people, said Spengler, whos been at it for six years. It is also good exercise.

Her interest in juggling began when she was young.

My dad used to juggle, she said.I learned to juggle at a 4-H camp, and then when I got to WVU , the interest just blossomed.

Anyone can pick up the hobby, she added. The only skills required are good hand-eye coordination and concentration.

Studies show the act of juggling actually uses areas of the brain that are usually dormant,Spengler noted.

The WVU Juggling Club meets once or twice a week during the fall and spring semesters. For more information, e-mail Spengler at lspengle@mix.wvu.edu .
