West Virginia Universitys Community Music Program is currently registering students for summer classes at the Creative Arts Center.

The program offers private lessons for children and adults in piano, organ, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, voice, jazz singing, harp and guitar.

The summer session is flexible to accommodate various summer schedules. Students may register for any number of lessons throughout the session, depending on teacher availability.

Summer classes include:

  • Summer Sampler: A Young Childs Intro to Music (for 2-3 year-olds and a parent or caregiver), a three-day class that will be held June 4, 11 and 18 (Session I) and July 18, 19 and 20 (Session II). Explore thefirst stepsin music education with your child and learn games and activities to develop a strong musical foundation.
  • Musicland Express (ages 4-6) is also a three-day class and will be held June 14, 15 and 16. In this class, children will discover and play with music, responding to what they hear with their bodies in movement, with their hands in playing musical instruments, and with their voices in singing.
  • Pop Stars of the Future (ages 13-18) is a six-week class, to be held June 21-Aug. 2, that teaches young adults how tobe a starlike their favorite American Idol contestants. Professional singer/songwriter Stephanie Adlington will teach aspiring young singers the basics, including stage performance techniques. Activities will be geared toward each students personal musical interests, including pop, rock, R&B, country, blues, contemporary and Christian styles.
  • Harp On It! is a six-week introductory harp class open to all age groups, with a limit of three students per class. Times for each class will be arranged. The students will study hand position and simple tunes. No musical background is necessary.
