West Virginia University guest speakers will address those frequently asked questions and more during a special presentation,When Things Go Right/When Things Go Wrong,at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, in the Martha C. Howard Lounge (also known as the Glass Lounge) at Stalnaker Hall on the downtown campus.

Hosted by the Monongalia County Mountaineer Parents Club, the event is designed for all WVU families, but is especially helpful forfirst-yearparents, said member Christine Garbutt.

Anita Mayer, director of the University Advising Center, and Keith Garbutt, director of the University Honors Program, will cover various topics, including advising, major scholarships, the honors program, honoraries, dropping classes and University support systems.

The Mountaineer Parents Club is leading the way in family support with more than 13,000 members. Formed in 1995 as one of five student life initiatives of WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr. , the organization is celebrating 10 years of helping families stay connected to their WVU students.

A newsletter, e-news updates and local club newsletters are all vehicles to inform parents. Fall Family Weekend and Mountaineer Parents Club Winter Weekend bring thousands of parents to campus, and Susan Lantz, who answers the toll-free parent helpline (1-800-WVU-0096), provides family members with answers to their questions and on-campus support. In addition, 62 local clubs and 18 state chairs bring WVU parents and students together in their communities for Summer Send-offs, Winter Fest activities and other informational events.

Many campuses are just discovering today what WVU realized 10 years ago: parents want to be involved, and students want their parents included in their college experience,said Susan Hardesty, national chair and wife of President Hardesty.
