Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will hold a memorial service Thursday, July 24, for a former West Virginia University student who died over the weekend.

The service for Derrick Hairston will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Mountainlairs Gluck Theatre, said Clifford Hill, the fraternitys National Panhellenic Council representative.

Speakers will include Hairstons relatives, WVU officials, local ministers and a representative of the Army National Guard, Hill said. Organizers will also open the service to others who would like to say a few words about their friend, and show a video of Hairstons recent participation in the annual WVU Step Show competition.

A candlelight vigil will follow outside the Mountainlair.

Hairston, who died Friday, July 18, in Morgantown, was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and served on the fraternitys community outreach committee before withdrawing in the spring, Hill said. The 21-year-old pre-business major from Northfork, McDowell County, was transferring to a school in Charlotte, N.C., he added.

Other organizations of which Hairston was a member while at WVU included ROTC , PassKey and the 2002 National Step Correct Team. He worked for United Parcel Service in Morgantown and was a member of the Army National Guard.

Hairston is survived by his father, Donald, of Northfork; mother, Julia, of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, and a stepsister.
