The West Virginia University College of Human Resources and Education will hold a luncheon colloquium,”Reconnaissance on Science&Mathematics Education in the Republic of Croatia,”11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, May 2, Room 601 Allen Hall. Dr. Eric Pyle, associate professor of science education, will discuss his Fulbright-sponsored experience at the University of Split in the Republic of Croatia.

“The Republic of Croatia, having become independent from Yugoslavia in 1991, is in the process of massive changes in the system of education, including the education of teachers,”Pyle said.”Having realized the critical professional needs of science and mathematics teachers, the University of Split recently received approval for a post-graduate degree program for science and mathematics teachers, to include targeted professional development for teachers.”

The presentation offers a brief overview and introduction to the state of science and mathematics education in the Republic of Croatia, the nature of the schools and their relationship with higher education, and the opportunities for collaboration with the University of Split.

The Fulbright Senior Specialist Program, which provided support for this reconnaissance trip, will also be described.

A light lunch will be available at 11:30 a.m., with the presentation starting at noon. The colloquium is co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the College of Human Resources and Education Diversity Task Force.
