West Virginia University recently held the 2002-03 Greek Awards ceremony to recognize and honor remarkable sororities, fraternities and individuals.

“I am very proud of the sorority and fraternity students and their accomplishments,”said Ron Justice, coordinator of Greek Affairs and Student Activities.”It is so outstanding to see students combine community service, leadership and scholarship to better West Virginia University.”

Among the sororities, Alpha Xi Delta and Kappa Kappa Gamma were both recognized as the Betty Miller Outstanding Sorority, and both won for their community service efforts.

Kappa Kappa Gamma and Chi Omega received the Outstanding Leadership Award and the Outstanding Philanthropy Award.

Alpha Xi Delta was recognized with the Outstanding Educational Programming/Chapter Development Award, placed first in scholastic achievement, and won the Pan-Hellenic Spirit Award.

Sigma Kappa received accolades for recruitment and won the Pan-Hellenic Award. Pi Beta Phi received the Special Achievement Award and was noted to be the most improved sorority.

In addition, Danielle Waltz, a mathematics major from East Liverpool, Ohio, and member of Chi Omega, was selected as the 2002 Greek Woman of the Year.

Beta Theta Pi fraternity was named the Joe Gluck Outstanding Fraternity, won for best community service, and placed first in scholastic achievement. Also, Jesse Liebig, an accounting major from Bridgeport, and treasurer of Beta Theta Pi, was identified as the Outstanding Greek Man of the Year.

In addition to being honored for exceptional leadership, Pi Kappa Phi’s excellent educational programming/chapter development was acknowledged and the brothers won the Special Achievement Award and first place in the intramural blue division.

Sigma Phi Epsilon won first place in the intramural gold division, and Phi Sigma Kappa was credited for its outstanding recruitment.

Phi Kappa Psi took home the Outstanding Philanthropy Award and was identified as the most improved fraternity.
