West Virginia University will host the first Governors Honors School for Math and Science next summer, according to an announcement made yesterday (June 13) by Gov. Bob Wise.

Funded by leftover funds raised for Gov. Wises 2001 Inauguration, the summer program will give a total of 120 seventh, eighth and ninth grade students the chance for concentrated study of math and science.

“Eric Pyle, associate professor in the College of Human Resources and Education, and WVU Provost Jerry Lang deserve credit for conceiving a plan and putting forth the concept for this Honors School,”commented WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr.”Dr. Pyle has a wealth of experience to bring to bear. In addition, the program is very compatible with recent WVU math and science education initiativestalented West Virginia high school students will truly benefit in the years to come from our work.”

Specific plans for the school and the selection of participants are still under way. Initial plans propose selecting two students from each West Virginia county, plus 10 at-large participants, for the two two-week sessions held on alternate university and college campuses each summer.
