Richard Thomas, WVU's newly named chair of the Department of Biology, knew he wanted to be a biologist after his first undergraduate class in ecology. After graduating and working on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina for a year, he found his niche in the field of plant physiological ecology.

Dean searches in two WVU colleges set to begin

Search committees have been appointed to seek candidates for the top posts in two of West Virginia University's colleges, Interim Provost Jane Martin announced Friday. WVU is seeking a new dean in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the University's largest college, to take the place of Mary Ellen Mazey, who left the college in February to become the Provost at Auburn University. English Professor Rudy Almasy has been acting as interim dean since that time.

Ruth Kershner joins elite group as West Virginia University's 17th CASE Professor of the Year. "It's exciting to love what you do and be acknowledged for it," Kershner said. "I'm just thrilled to be able to represent this University and the state of West Virginia. There are so many excellent faculty here at WVU and in the state."

Richard A. Bajura, director of the National Research Center for Coal and Energy at West Virginia University, is an excellent source for expert commentary on issues being raised this week with the Chinese during President Barack Obama's state visit. He has special expertise in coal sequestration, which is a significant point of discussion with the Chinese.

West Virginia University Board of Governors Chair Carolyn Long commended Gov. Joe Manchin on today's (Nov. 17) appointment of Thomas V. Flaherty as a new member of the Board. "Tom Flaherty is an outstanding attorney and community servant, and someone who has made this state and University proud," Long said. "I think he'll make an excellent Board member. We welcome his input and expertise as we continue to work together on behalf of WVU."
