The renowned writer of "Rocket Boys" visited WVU on Oct. 6 for a guest lecture in an English graduate fiction class and for a book signing in the Mountainlair.

The West Virginia University Marching Band, under the direction of Jay Drury, will present its annual "Keynotes Concerts" at the Creative Arts Center, Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 30 & Dec. 1. The concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre and will feature the Band's full complement of brass, woodwinds, percussion, flags and feature twirlers. They will perform musical highlights from the 2009 football season, including favorite pre-game and halftime music.

Armed with little more than a Communication Studies degree from West Virginia University, and a New Jersey teaching certificate, Tommy Caprio headed off to Los Angeles to join the throngs looking for success in Hollywood. Unlike many, Caprio found it.

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of our great U.S. Presidents, the WVU Symphony Orchestra will perform "Lincoln Portrait" by Aaron Copland, during a concert at the Creative Arts Center, Thursday, Nov. 19. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre, under the baton of Maestro Mitchell Arnold, director of Orchestral Studies at WVU.

'Love of the Nightingale' opens at CAC Nov. 19

WVU Theatre students take on themes of power and relationships in their next play, "The Love of the Nightingale," by Timberlake Wertenbaker, which opens at the Creative Arts Center, Thurs., Nov. 19. A dark meditation on violence and its legacies, the play is also about love, language and loss that ultimately questions what kind of world we will pass on to our children. It is an adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Philomela.

West Virginia University Board of Governors Chair Carolyn Long commended Gov. Joe Manchin on today's (Nov. 17) appointment of Thomas V. Flaherty as a new member of the Board. "Tom Flaherty is an outstanding attorney and community servant, and someone who has made this state and University proud," Long said. "I think he'll make an excellent Board member. We welcome his input and expertise as we continue to work together on behalf of WVU."
