AT HOME IN THE WORLD - Posted: Sep 03 2008

Max Reinke joins National Geographic this week as an intern in the renowned magazine's Washington, D.C., offices. He's just one of 11 geography majors across the U.S. and the world to land such an honor. He'll review grants and work with teachers and lawmakers to help advance National Geographic's educational mission to make youngsters more aware of geography and how it figures into their daily lives. Reinke wants to work in the State Department after graduation, and he says geographers have a degree of global awareness some people might not realize, since the discipline addresses everything from political unrest to global warming. "When you know geography, you know the world," he said, "and you start thinking about ways to make it better."
